For Toby, being a tour guide is a natural extension of his travel philosophy. “When I visit somewhere new, I always go with a guide so they can explain what I’m seeing,” he says. “At Hike Maui, I love being able to share the beauty of nature with guests, so they can experience something they may not otherwise have an opportunity to do on their own.”
With a degree in political science under his belt, Toby worked on the Biden campaign straight out of college. He enjoyed it, but wanted something more. A short stint with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection in Connecticut taught him he didn’t want to sit behind a desk at that particular time in his life. So in 2021, he came to Maui to visit a friend and never left. “Growing up, I never had a chance to play in the ocean, so now I’m in the water as often as possible.”
While on tour, Toby strives to provide the most meaningful experience he can for his guests. “It’s my goal every day to educate people about the rainforest, waterfalls, and nature in general, and make sure we all have lots of fun at the same time.”
Guest quote: Toby was extremely informative, super friendly, and an excellent guide. He has a great narrating voice and is very articulate. You can tell he cares about his job.
