We are thrilled to announce Des as our Guide of the Quarter! Since joining Hike Maui in October 2021, Des has been a beacon of positive, happy energy, bringing joy, genuine care, and true leadership to every hike she leads.

Des’s enthusiasm and passion for the outdoors make her an exceptional guide. She is dedicated to creating memorable and enriching experiences for our guests, always with a smile and a wealth of knowledge. Whether she’s leading a hike through lush rainforests, to hidden waterfalls, or along the scenic trails of Haleakala, Des’s vibrant spirit and expertise shine through.

Deep Roots and Rich Heritage

Growing up in Ha’iku, Des developed a deep connection to Maui’s natural beauty. She fondly recalls, “All the ponds I take guests to now are those I learned to swim in.” With ancestral roots tracing back to one of Maui’s high chiefs and Portuguese immigrants, Des’s heritage is as rich as her love for the island. This deep connection to her homeland enriches her guiding, allowing her to share not only the sights but also the stories and history of Maui.

Educational and Environmental Commitment

Des leverages her degree in Hawaiian studies and background in environmental education to provide an immersive and educational experience for all hikers. She passionately teaches the Hawaiian language, often emphasizing the word kuleana—which means both privilege and responsibility. “It’s our kuleana to leave no trace and be good stewards of the land,” she reminds us. Her commitment to environmental stewardship and education ensures that every hike is not just an adventure but also a lesson in conservation and respect for nature.

Celebrating Des’s Achievements

As our Guide of the Quarter, Des receives a well-deserved bonus and the opportunity to host a “pau hana” with our crew, celebrating her achievements and contributions. Additionally, she has the honor of directing this quarter’s 1% for the Planet donation, furthering her impact on our community and environment.

Life Beyond the Trails

When she’s not guiding, Des enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, longboarding, and fishing. Her love for outdoor activities mirrors her dedication to providing incredible hiking experiences for our guests.
